Ladies-Only Timings: Why Gyms in India Should Offer Them

Many women want to train but never walk into a mixed gym at peak hour. A well-run ladies-only slot can open your gym to a whole new group of members — here's how to set one up so it actually fills.

Ask women in any Indian town why they don't go to the gym and you'll hear the same answers: "It's always full of men in the evening." "I don't know how to use the machines and I don't want to be watched." "My family is more comfortable if it's women-only."

None of those are reasons not to exercise. They're reasons not to walk into your gym at 7 PM. A dedicated ladies-only timing removes the barrier — and for many gyms, it becomes one of the most loyal groups of members they have.

The demand is real, and often invisible

Gym owners sometimes say, "We don't get many women enquiries." That's the point. The women who would join a ladies-only batch aren't enquiring at a mixed gym. They're walking in the park, doing yoga videos at home, or joining a studio across town.

A ladies-only slot makes that demand visible. Homemakers after the school run, college students, working women before office, and mothers who want to train alongside their daughters are all common groups who show up once the slot exists.

Choosing the right hours

The best ladies-only timing is usually your quietest hour for everyone else — which conveniently also means you have the floor space.

  • Mid-morning (10 AM – 12 PM) works well for homemakers and women who work from home.
  • Early morning (6 – 7 AM) suits working women and college students.
  • Early afternoon can work in towns where the evening rush starts late.

Start with one slot, three or more days a week. It's better to have one consistently full batch than three half-empty ones.

Make it genuinely comfortable

A timing on a board isn't enough. What makes a ladies-only slot work:

  1. A woman trainer, at least for the first few months. This matters more than any equipment.
  2. A clear rule that the floor is closed to male members during the slot — and that the rule is actually kept.
  3. Beginner-friendly programming. Many members in this batch are new to strength training. A simple, structured plan beats "use whatever you like."
  4. Privacy for measurements. Weight and body measurements should be recorded quietly and visible only to the member and her trainer.

Show it clearly to new members

One of the most common problems: the slot exists, but nobody knows. It's on a paper notice inside the gym, which the women you're trying to reach never see.

In Viyazhaa, any time slot can be marked ladies-only. When a User explores your centre and sends a join request, she sees the ladies-only timing labelled clearly and can pick it directly. You see her request with the timing she chose, and accept it with one tap.

Because Viyazhaa also shows how full each slot is, you'll know when the ladies-only batch is approaching capacity — and when it's time to open a second one.

Pricing: same plan, or separate?

Keep it simple. Most gyms charge the same monthly fee for the ladies-only batch as for any other timing. Separate pricing creates confusion and makes women feel the batch is a "lesser" option.

If you do offer a package — say, a three-month plan with a diet consultation — offer it to all members, and simply let ladies-only be a choice of timing.

Programming that keeps them coming

Members of a ladies-only batch often come in with specific goals: weight loss, strength after pregnancy, managing PCOS or thyroid with their doctor's advice, or general fitness. Give the batch:

  • A default workout plan for beginners, updated monthly so it doesn't get stale.
  • Diet plan templates they can actually follow with home food — idli, dosa, rice and dal, not imported ingredients.
  • Monthly measurements so progress is visible even when the scale doesn't move.

With group plans in Viyazhaa, you build the plan once and assign it to the whole batch. Each member sees today's workout and diet in her app.

Measure whether it's working

After two or three months, look at:

  • How many new members joined specifically for the ladies-only timing.
  • Their attendance compared to your other batches.
  • Renewal rate at the end of their first plan.

Many owners find that a well-run ladies-only batch has better attendance than mixed batches, because members come together, encourage each other, and treat it as their time.

The takeaway

A ladies-only timing isn't a favour or a marketing gimmick. It's a practical way to serve people who already want to train but haven't found a place that feels right. Pick a quiet hour, staff it with a woman trainer, show it clearly to new members, and give the batch a real plan. The batch will usually fill itself through word of mouth.
